How UIF registration and payments work

We help you register, deduct, and stay compliant, so your domestic worker gets the protection they deserve.

🛡️ What is UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a government benefit fund that provides income to workers when:

  • They go on maternity leave/Parental Leave

  • They lose their job

  • They’re unable to work due to illness

  • Their employer passes away or becomes insolvent

It’s required by law for all employers who pay a worker who works more than 24 hours per month.

The Employee cannot claim UIF if he resigns.

👥 Who must register?

✅ You must register for UIF if:

  • You employ a domestic worker, nanny, gardener, or cleaner

  • They work more than 24 hours per month

❌ You don’t need to register if:

  • You employ someone for occasional, irregular work under 24 hours/month

  • You’re hiring via an agency that handles UIF for you

🧾 What does AskMandla do?

We help you:

  1. Register as an employer with the Department of Labour

  2. Register your employee on your UIF account

  3. Calculate the correct deduction each month

  4. Show the UIF on the payslip

  5. Guide you through payment or submit for you (optional)

⚙️ We handle the admin. You stay legal.

💸 How much do I pay?

2% of the employee’s salary each month

  • 1% comes from the employer (you)

  • 1% is deducted from the employee’s salary

📌 Example:
If you pay R3,500/month:

  • You pay R35

  • Your employee contributes R35

  • Total UIF = R70

🧮 How it’s shown on your invoice & payslip

Each month:

  • Your invoice will include the employer UIF contribution

  • The employee UIF portion will be automatically deducted

  • The payslip will show both amounts clearly

🧾 This creates proof of compliance for both parties.

📥 Where does the UIF money go?

If AskMandla is filing for you:

  • We collect and submit the UIF to the Department of Labour each month

  • We use your UIF reference number and match payments to the payslips

If you’re filing yourself:

  • We’ll give you the amounts and details to make payment manually via uFiling or EFT

🗂️ What if I’m not registered yet?

No problem. When you sign up:

  • We’ll guide you through the registration process

  • Or do it on your behalf (if you choose this option)

📝 We’ll need your ID, employee details, and your address to get started.

🤔 Why is UIF important?

Without UIF, your employee:

  • Cannot claim maternity benefits

  • Cannot claim unemployment income

  • Is not legally protected if dismissed

With UIF, they have a safety net and so do you.
