How to explain UIF to your employee

What it means, why it matters, and how AskMandla helps both of you stay compliant.

🛡️ Start with the purpose

UIF stands for the Unemployment Insurance Fund. It’s a government fund that gives workers financial protection when:

  • They lose their job

  • They go on maternity leave

  • They’re too sick to work

  • Their employer dies

💬 What you can say to your employee

Here’s an easy way to explain it:

“UIF is like a safety net. I deduct a small amount from your salary each month, and I also contribute a little bit myself. That money goes to the government so that, if anything happens, you can get help.”

You can also say:

“I’m using AskMandla to make sure we’re doing it right. They calculate it, file it, and give us both the proof we need.”

💸 How much is UIF?

  • 1% of your employee’s salary is deducted from their pay

  • 1% is paid by you, the employer

  • AskMandla includes both in the monthly invoice

  • We send the money to the UIF on your behalf (if you’re registered)

💡 So if your employee earns R3,000:

  • R30 is deducted from their salary

  • You pay R30 as the employer

  • UIF receives R60 in total each month

📄 What your employee will see

AskMandla:

  • Shows UIF on the monthly payslip

  • Tracks how much has been paid over time

  • Can send a summary on WhatsApp if they ask

  • Files the monthly UIF declaration with the Department of Labour

You can tell them:

“Your payslip shows exactly what’s been paid. And if you ever need to claim UIF, you’ll have all the records.”

❓ Common questions from workers (and how to answer)

Question What You Can Say
“Can I get the money now?” “No, UIF only pays out if you lose your job or go on special leave.”
“How will I claim?” “You’ll go to the Labour Department. AskMandla will help us get the documents you need.”
“What if I work for more than one family?” “Each family pays their own UIF. AskMandla keeps it separate.”
“What if I stop working?” “You can claim from UIF for a few months — that’s what the contributions are for.”

🧾 Why UIF matters for your employee

  • It gives them protection during hard times

  • It proves they are a registered, legal worker

  • It helps with things like credit applications or SASSA

  • It shows that you’re treating them fairly and professionally
